A Dog for George: North Texas Giving Day
Give Online | Aug. 28-Sept. 18, 2025
This year, we’re participating in North Texas Giving Day to grant a wish for George.
George is a 9-year-old boy from Fort Worth who was diagnosed earlier this year with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, an aggressive and rare form of pediatric cancer. He loves being outside to play soccer and basketball and is known for stopping and saying hello to every single dog in his neighborhood.
George has always wanted a dog more than anything, but the answer was always no.
But in the dark hours of that first night at Cook Children’s, “everything changed,” George’s mom shared. “We decided we would never put off joy again.”
The promise of a dog was the balm that soothed him in those early days of chemo, nausea, fatigue and the sadness of knowing he wouldn’t soon be going home. As we watched him play with our own Willie the Wish Dog on a visit to the Wish House, we knew we couldn’t wait for George’s “Puppy Wish” to come true. We were recently thrilled to tell George that he will be receiving his very own puppy in October! The promise of a new furry friend and the hope of walks, snuggling and normalcy keep George going on his hardest days. George enjoys reading Greek mythology and decided to name his puppy Apollo, after the Greek god of healing.
Of course, Apollo will need food, veterinary care and more. Your gift this North Texas Giving Day will ensure George and Apollo have what they need.
